Purposes

The editor will be responsible to oversee all that is required to take a manuscript from the writing stage to finished publication, either print or electronic. This includes understanding the sources referenced in the manuscript, being able to do in-depth research when necessary, and being able to resolve questions raised by source checkers; reading the manuscript to identify problems with style and substance and resolving them; working with all those involved in the process to resolve concerns; preparing the manuscript to be typeset; and reading typeset text and resolving problems created at that stage. The editor must have an expert understanding of style matters, be an expert proofreader, be able to analyze written material and see the concerns that need to be addressed, and be able to work well in pressured, complex situations to resolve problems with a variety of people. The editor must be able to work well with the writers, editors, and others assigned to the project. The editor should also have a strong knowledge of early Church history and of the primary documents important in early Church history.

Qualifications

Bachelor?s degree in English or related field (master?s degree preferred)

College-level coursework in editing preferred but not required

At least two years of experience in professional editing or writing

Expert abilities in substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading

Experience with electronic publishing (especially XML) and page-layout software preferred but not required

Experience creating or editing indexes preferred but not required

Strong knowledge of early Church history and the documents important in early Church history

Ability to research in original sources

Ability to give scrupulous attention to detail and sustain concentration for long periods of time with the highest level of accuracy

Ability to organize work on many projects simultaneously and meet production schedules under pressure

Ability to work in harmony with a wide variety of people

Worthiness Qualification

Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple worthy.
