The news is spreading that on June 15, Ron Romig was informed that budget cuts would would necessitate the elimination of his job as archivist at the Community of Christ archives. A number of outlets have the complete story. Apparently as of the story’s writing Community of Christ President Steve Veazey had received 18 letters on Ron’s behalf asking them to reconsider. No doubt you will be receiving a number of similar letters in the coming days. Thank you for your time in considering them, and please accept them in the spirit of friendship in which they are sent. I would like to add my voice to those that have already spoken in recognition of Ron Romig’s extensive and ongoing contributions to Mormon history.
As an undergraduate, just starting out on the road to a Bachelor’s degree in history, I chose to research the folklore surrounding a significant artifact of Mormon history, the Hiram Page Seer Stone, for my sophomore historical methodology class. As a budding historian, I found the prospect of plunging into the professional world daunting. I contacted Ron Romig at the suggestion of some local contacts and Ron went out of his way to help me as best he could from a distance. I made the decision to travel to Independence where Ron met me and arranged for me to view relevant documents and artifacts in the Community of Christ’s possession. I can’t express what this personal, informed assistance meant to a young student just becoming acquainted with the professional world, and how it made my project possible. Since then I have been able to count Ron as a friend and colleague, and he has offered invaluable support and assistance.
I recognize the real economic realities behind this difficult decision to eliminate Ron’s position. This having been said, Ron’s consideration and knowledge are treasures, and I feel that the Community of Christ as well as Mormon history in general would suffer a great loss should Ron fail to continue as archivist. I respectfully ask that the decision to eliminate Ron’s position be reconsidered.

Nice job, Jared. I also sent one of the 18 letters thus far received. Having had several experiences with Ron over the years, I’m convinced he’s not only a huge asset to the Mormon historical community, but also the best good will ambassador the Community of Christ has.

Thank you, Jared! Ron really helped me through some difficult issues on church history as an undergraduate. Like Jared, I urge anyone who appreciates Ron to write a letter to the CofC First Presidency on his behalf.

Thanks Nick and David, I think you’re right Nick, about Ron being a good ambassador. He has had the ability to transcend scholarly generations as well as religious differences.
David, in case the need arose, is there an email address concerned individuals can use to direct their sentiments?

Thanks, David. I’ve had a number of people contact me asking about that, though I agree, a letter would be more effective.
Whatever the result, I encourage all to show support for Ron in the face of what might have otherwise been a very unceremonious exit.
