The Juvenile Instructor would like to thank BHodges for his contributions as a guest blogger the last week and a half. His insights into the Journal of Discourses produced some great discussion, and we encourage everyone interested to keep up with his exploration of the JD over at his blog, Life on Gold Plates. Please leave a comment helping us thank him for his contributions. Thanks again, BHodges.
Interesting stuff BHodges. I look forward to more on the JD. I even got out my electronic copy after one discussion to have a closer look at some of the stuff so that is a positive for me.

BH, good stuff. Thanks for sharing. I’ve meant to ask before now: at the SLC MHA plenary session on the Utah War there was a bit of a discussion over Ron Walker’s paper and the idea that research on the Reformation sermons tends to focus upon the bombastic and leave out the exhortations to forgive, to be peaceful, etc. Have you looked closely at the Reformation era sermons with an eye tuned to those issues? I’d be interested in what you find and your overall assessment of it.

Paul: I have just arrived at that spot in my reading. I am currently on volume 4, which is where the more flamboyant discourses begin, and have noticed that much of the tub thumping was combined with encouragement and general exhortations to be happy. It is a strange period, and I will make sure to focus in to see the different trends.
