PURPOSES
The successful applicant will direct the Publications Division of the Church History Department, which includes teams responsible for the Joseph Smith Papers; Saints: The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days; women’s history publications; history.lds.org; and other initiatives. This position demands a deep knowledge of and experience with historical research and writing, editing, and publishing, as well as a content knowledge of Latter-day Saint history. Accurate and authoritative publications from the Church History Department are a key component in fulfilling the department’s purposes: “sharing a record of His Church and its people,” “ensuring remembrance of God’s hand in the lives of His children,” and “witnessing to and defending the truths of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee the publications of the Church History Department, ensuring that they meet high scholarly and ecclesiastical standards.
Ensure that publications meet deadlines and stay within budget.
Provide leadership and direction to division staff members and act as a leader within the Church History Department. Workforce includes full-time historians, editors, and web specialists; contract workers and interns; and missionaries and volunteers.
Participate in collaborative projects with other divisions within the Church History Department and with other departments.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in history, English, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Comprehensive knowledge of Latter-day Saint history and historiography.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong skills necessary for collaborative work, including analysis, problem-solving, and negotiation.
Experience in writing, editing, and/or publishing for academic and/or popular audiences.
Project management skills with a proven track record of delivery and employee retention.
Knowledge of Church governance, with ability to communicate and interact effectively with senior operations and ecclesiastical leadership.
Experience in and enjoyment of leading and developing people.
Ability to work well with others from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds.
Ability to work effectively with other directors in a council model.
WORTHINESS QUALIFICATION
Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple worthy.
