Paid Summer Internship: Joseph Smith Historic Site (Nauvoo, Illinois) – Historical Interpretation

The Joseph Smith Historic Site preserves the properties and memories of Joseph Smith Jr., founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, his father, Joseph Smith Sr., and son, Joseph Smith III. The site houses many original structures from the 1840s, as well as the Smith Family Cemetery, final resting place of Joseph and Emma Smith, Hyrum Smith, Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith, and numerous other family members and friends. The Joseph Smith Historic Site is part of the Nauvoo National Historic Landmark District.

Consider an internship in Nauvoo, Illinois, at the Joseph Smith Historic Site, for a rewarding and fun experience where you will:

  • Deepen your understanding of how to be a professional historian
  • Improve your public speaking skills while leading professional tours
  • Serve in hospitality and tourism at a historic site
  • Assist in managing a retail store
  • Learn museum curation and artifact preservation

Time Frame: Late May – Mid August. Some flexibility available. Typical work week is Monday through Saturday, typical 9-5 schedule and Sunday 1-5 schedule, 2 days off per week. During the beginning of the internship, evening classes are held three times a week. Housing and utilities are provided.

Supervised historical research by an on-site historian and other project opportunities are available for advanced undergraduates and graduate students.

  1. I participated in the internship in 2011. My wife, Christine, and I had only been married less than a year and it was about the coolest pre-baby summer possible. (I highly recommend it for couples!) It was a wonderful experience that transformed the way I have come to think of Nauvoo and history in general. Plus, there are amazing adventures to be had in Nauvoo.
