Job Summary
The senior editor at BYU Studies is committed to publishing impeccable scholarship that is informed by the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. She or he has a creative vision for making the scholarship published in BYU Studies both more relevant to and more accessible to well educated but non-specialist readers. The successful applicant will assist the editor in chief and the editorial director in publishing. They will also possess the ability to manage growth initiatives designed to exponentially increase awareness of BYU Studies content. The senior editor is capable and comfortable discussing scholarship in a variety of disciplines, managing student editors, editing journals, working with digital humanities, and implementing marketing principles. This position requires the candidate to work with students, staff, editorial board members, scholars, contractors, printers, and the media.
Essential Functions:
1. Journal publication
- Take a leading role in the publication of quarterly issues of BYU Studies Quarterly
- Assist in editorial review process
- Perform copy and content edits
- Collaborate on developing opportunities to promote BYU Studies publications
- Remain current on best practices
2. Administrative management
- Manage growth initiatives
- Data analysis and other technical duties
- Facilitate meetings
3. Coordination
- Supervise student interns in editing and marketing
- Engage with students, administrative staff, editorial board members, contractors, printers, and the media
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor’s degree (editing or related); extensive copy editing experience, 10 years professional experience in either marketing, operations, business development, or strategic planning
Preferred:
Master’s degree (editing or related); extensive copy editing experience, 15 years professional experience in either marketing, operations, business development, or strategic planning
Skills:
- Strong familiarity with church history issues, today’s leading scholars, and the history of BYU Studies
- Conversant with the Chicago Manual of Style
- Supervise student editors and marketers
- Experience in collaborating with and leading multidisciplinary teams
- Google Workspace expertise
- Understanding of social-media marketing and search-engine optimization
- Familiarity with data-driven decisions
- Superior communication skills (in-person, written, and virtual) with students and professionals
- Ability to discuss controversial issues with diplomacy, tact, and appropriate confidentiality
- Ability to negotiate, manage, and solve business problems
- Ability to understand, analyze, and interpret data
- Superior time-management and organizational abilities
- Creative problem-solving ability
