The Mormon History Association is conducting a search for the editor of the Journal of Mormon History. The editor of the journal determines the content, solicits submissions, oversees peer review, works with submitting authors in performing substantive and stylistic content editing, and coordinates with a JMH production staff and the University of Illinois Press to ensure that quarterly issues of the journal are published according to deadline and within budget. The editor has full editorial control of the journal but reports to the MHA Board of Directors in maintaining a high-quality product that serves as the flagship publication for the organization. The Mormon History Association is particularly interested in mid-career and senior scholars with experience in the history of the Mormon tradition but will consider submissions by all qualified applicants.
The person chosen to be the editor will be appointed to a part-time four-year term beginning in December 2022, renewable at the discretion of the MHA Board of Directors. They will serve as co-editor until August 2023, when Jessie L. Embry will complete her term.
The co-editorship contract is $12K annually, paid in equal installments quarterly. Beginning on September 1, 2023, the sole editorship contract is $18K, paid in equal installments quarterly. The Mormon History Association is also willing to discuss the possibility of a course buyout. The editor will work remotely with full control over his/her schedule and will receive up to a $3k annual stipend to attend two conferences—the MHA conference and a second similar conference to represent JMH and to solicit article submissions—annual membership to MHA, and reasonable and approved out of pocket expenses incurred in the ordinary conduct of performing JMH business
Interested individuals should submit an application consisting of a cover letter with a statement of qualifications, philosophy/vision for JMH, a CV or resume, two letters of recommendation (sent separately so as to preserve confidentiality), and a writing or editing sample. Applications should be submitted electronically to Julie Allen, chair of the search committee, at Julie_allen@byu.edu and to Christine Blythe, MHA Executive Director, at christine@mormonhistoryassociation.org. The deadline for applications, including the receipt of letters of recommendation, is October 15, 2022. However, the search will be reopened if a suitable candidate is not identified. The search committee will notify applicants in late October.
confession: Every time I see this blog post, I think it’s going to be about the biblical figure Job, then I read past the colon and I get confused for a minute…
