JOB: JWHA Journal Editor

Position Summary:

The Editor of the John Whitmer Historical Association will manage the accession, review, acceptance/rejection, revision, and editing of professional articles, book reviews, and letters to prepare for submission to the production director for each biannual issue.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Selects and supervises a copy editor who amends every manuscript in compliance with The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th
  • Selects and supervises a book review editor who, in turn, selects books for review, assigns them to reviewers, receives, and transmits them to the Editor.
  • Selects and collaborates with an editorial board for manuscript review and counsel.
  • Works in tandem with the Editor of Restoration Studies to receive manuscripts for the Fall issue,

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Makes editorial decisions concerning the content and suitability of material for publication.
  • Uses word processing software to edit and prepare copy for the Production Director.
  • Edits publications according to organizational specifications for style, tone, and length while ensuring correct use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Works with authors to select and finalize artwork, photography, and text for reproduction.
  • Ensures that articles, reviews, and letters meet style, formatting, and general quality standards.
  • Ensures publications are edited according to deadline.
  • Examines physical proofs of printed materials.
  • Confirms that publications meet specifications of the Editorial Policy of the JWHA Journal.
  • Maintains knowledge of developments and trends in the area of Restoration history.
  • Assures that necessary permissions and Publication Agreements are complete.
  • Maintains confidentiality of the review process.
  • Complies with media law and ethical guidelines.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in working with editorial board and authors.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, or similar software.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s or higher degree preferred.
  • Acknowledged scholarship in Restoration history and studies.
  • At least four years of experience in editing and publishing.

Stipend:

  • $3,000 per volume.
