Read more: Call for Applicants: History Curator–Church History MuseumThe Church History Museum is seeking a curator of history to join its staff. The mission of the museum is to provide opportunities for our patrons to connect to the history of the Church and the growing spiritual, artistic, and cultural legacies of the Latter-day Saints throughout the world.
The curator will work closely with other staff members to create both permanent and temporary exhibitions. A successful curator will be committed to the highest standards of historical accuracy and will value collaboration, storytelling, and public history approaches. We seek candidates who are creative thinkers, willing to learn new skills and master new fields of historical study.
Responsibilities
Work may include but is not limited to:
- Developing original exhibition concepts that align with the museum’s mission and vision
- Conducting in-depth historical research to support exhibition narratives
- Identifying, organizing, and interpreting artifacts, documents, and multimedia materials
- Collaborating with designers, educators, registrars, conservators, and other museum staff to create engaging and accessible content
- Writing exhibition text and other interpretive materials
- Helping coordinate logistics for exhibition installation, conservation, and maintenance
- Engaging with scholars, community members, and stakeholders to seek and incorporate feedback
- Developing deep knowledge of the museum collection and act as an advocate for object-based history and material culture approaches
- Conducting VIP tours of museum exhibitions
- Contributing to other Church History Department products or assignments as requested
- Serving as part of the museum’s leadership team
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in history, religious studies, museum studies, or a related field
- 7 to 10 years of experience in creating publications, exhibits, historic sites, websites, audiovisual materials, public programs, etc.
- Demonstrated expertise in Latter-day Saint history, understanding of historical and material culture methodology, and knowledge of relevant historiography
- Demonstrated ability to conduct original research in primary and secondary sources
- Ability to work independently in a rigorous, production-oriented setting and also to work effectively as a collaborator in a team environment, where values of community, respect, and integrity inform the culture
- Ability to define and meet productivity goals
- Ability to effectively supervise the work of interns or less experienced colleagues
