[Updated] Recently Published and Forthcoming Books on Mormon History, November 2009 Edition

By February 5, 2010

Update: See end of list for Signature Book’s 2010 list of forthcoming titles.

Last year I put together, with help from a number of publishers, a list of forthcoming and recently published books on Mormon History.  Most of those books highlighted last November have indeed found a place on bookshelves, so it’s about time to do it again.  There are some exciting books that have recently come off the press and which are still forthcoming.  I wasn’t able to be as comprehensive as last time, but there are still some neat things on the horizon that I was able to find, and maybe I’ll be able to do a follow up post. For now, I’m sure I missed some titles, so if you know of others, please leave a comment and I’ll add it to the list.

  1. Awesome. Thanks for putting this together, Jared.

On question (which you may very well not know the answer to) … is Roger Minert’s history of East German LDS during WWII a joint effort between the RSC and Millennial Press? The RSC also lists it on their website, and I know that the folks at the RSC did all of the copyediting, source checking, and design layout for the book.

  7. Chris, no, I think that’s just an error on my part. I think you’re right that that’s an RSC publication. I don’t remember seeing it last week there on the RSC site when I began poking around for this list, but there it is. Thanks for the correction! And it appears to have been released also.

    Thanks Ben, Randy, and David!

Matt, thank you. Definitely. I had forgotten about that one. I’ll add it to the list.

  8. I’m especially interested in seeing Excavating Nauvoo from the U Nebraska Press. Does anyone know anything about the author or the project?

Also, I’m not familiar with Thomas Spencer or his work on Missouri. Anyone have any info on that?

  9. I had previously heard that the 2nd part of “At Sword’s Point” was going to be released in 2010 by Arthur H. Clark. Perhaps that date has changed.

    Comment by Bret — November 30, 2009 @ 12:22 pm

  10. Thanks for the tip, Bret. I’ll check it out.

Also, I’ve updated the Eborn listing. Also added a Routledge publication.

  11. Did Ebron already release “Who Shall Ascend Into the Hill of the Lord? The Psalms in Israel’s Temple Worship in the Old Testament in the Book of Mormon”? I thought that was 2010, also.

    Comment by Bret — November 30, 2009 @ 12:32 pm

  12. It is, but that and many other books like it don’t fit the Mormon History criteria, at least, not that I know of.

    Comment by Jared T — November 30, 2009 @ 12:38 pm

  13. Jared, Tom Spencer is a prof at a small university in Missouri; I don’t recall at the moment which one. He’s not LDS, but has written on the Mormon experience in MO. I met him at JWHA a few years back and he’s a super nice guy. He was presenting a paper on Haun’s Mill in Missouri memory, which last I heard was supposed to be published in the Missouri Historical Review. Although Amazon doesn’t specify it, my guess is that these essays are from a conference held in 2006 to commemorate Kit Bond’s 1976 gubernatorial order to rescind the Extermination Order.

  14. David, thank you for that added info. I’m interested to see what comes of it.

  18. I just got word from Benchmark Books that Lengthen Your Stride: The Presidency of Spencer W. Kimball, Working Draft is at press with some copies hopefully available by Christmas. As many of you know, the biography of Pres. Kimball by his son Edward was printed by Deseret Book and included an expanded working draft with extensive footnotes on a cd in the back of the book. Benchmark Books, with permission of the publisher, will produce 400 copies of this expanded edition with a retail price of $99.95.

I’ve known about this project for a little bit, and am glad to see it come to fruition. I’m all for digital collections, but I’m a sucker for the printed word. This will be a must purchase for me.

Just FYI, while we’re talking about forthcoming books.

    Comment by Jared T — December 1, 2009 @ 5:58 pm

  19. Jared, I remember hearing about this a couple of years ago. Glad to see it make it to press. Do you happen to know whether the working draft will be updated at all?

    Comment by J. Stapley — December 1, 2009 @ 6:36 pm

  20. That is good news, Jared; I don’t have my digital copy with me, but it seems that the working draft was definitely long. (I also remember noting that while a lot of the material in the longer version was awesome, a majority of what was finally cut was often redundant and tangential–not to take away from the amazing quality of the overall volume.)

I also wonder, with J, if it will be updated. Reading over his BYU Studies article, which was just his chapters from the biography on the priesthood ban, I kept wishing that he would engage Prince’s bio of McKay, since they seemed to have different interpretations of the priesthood developments during the 1950s and 60s.

    Comment by Ben — December 1, 2009 @ 6:49 pm

  21. Ben and J,

    I don’t think it’s updated at all.

    Comment by Jared T. — December 2, 2009 @ 6:56 pm

  22. According to the FARMS website, One Eternal Round will be available for purchase in January. (I assume this refers to actual, take-the-book-off-the-shelf-and-bring-it-home purchases, not just advance orders.)

    Comment by Terry — December 2, 2009 @ 8:16 pm

  23. I just got word that the George Watt biography has been released along with a regional book, Exploring Desert Stone.

    Comment by Jared T — December 3, 2009 @ 10:51 am

  24. Richard Bennett’s We’ll Find the Place (U of Oklahoma P) also came out in paperback this year. I assume that Pykles’ book is a reworking of his dissertation.

    Comment by Justin — December 4, 2009 @ 11:31 am

  25. I saw today at Confetti Antiques and then at the BYU Bookstore that the Francis Gibbons biographies of the prophets are back in print, this time in paperback. Certainly in the realm of hagiography, Gibbons had a unique perspective from which he wrote and I’ve noticed that some of the biographies include some otherwise unavailable source material. For example, the Joseph Fielding Smith bio, actually one of the larger of the biographies, lists Joseph Fielding Smith’s journal as a reference and at times preferences a citation with “according to Smith’s diary.” Not to shabby methinks. But they are way overpriced for a really cheap paper and paperback.

    Comment by Jared T — December 10, 2009 @ 3:28 am

  26. Ron Watt just handed me a copy of The Mormon Passage of George D. Watt — it’s a beautiful object, and I’m looking forward to reading about the man that Ron has introduced so delightfully in his conference papers built around GDW’s life.

    Comment by Ardis Parshall — December 10, 2009 @ 12:43 pm

  27. Thanks, Ardis. I got to see some copies at Benchmark a few days ago and they do look nice.

  28. Just in my inbox:

This is the complete manuscript (?working draft) of the biography published by Deseret Book in 2005 that is more than twice the length of that edited version. 29. Nice update about the Signature books. I understand that Taysom’s edited volume will be extraordinary. Also, not on this list is Taysom’s Shakers, Mormons, and Religious Worlds: Conflicting Visions, Contested Boundaries.

BYU Studies is doing for the The St. Louis Luminary (August 2010) what they did for the Frontier Gaurdian.

It looks like Utah University Press also has forthcoming To The Peripheries of Mormondom: The Apostolic Around-the-World Journey of David O McKay.

    Comment by J. Stapley — February 5, 2010 @ 5:58 pm

  30. The Nauvoo Minutes that Signature is publishing seem like something that the JSP folks might be doing, no?

    Comment by J. Stapley — February 5, 2010 @ 6:11 pm

  31. Apparently, (according to Michael Marquardt) Lost Apostles will not be published by John Whitmer Books after all. Signature Books has taken it on for a probable 2011 release.

    Comment by Reed Russell — February 5, 2010 @ 6:15 pm

  32. Jared, thanks for the list!
For those, like me with old and tired eyes, who are becoming more and more dependent on the computer for reading, I highly recommend the FREE download of “Readability”. It gives my 24″ screen a Kindle-like look/feel. It doesn’t convert everything online. But try it on something like your post. ( sadly, it doesn’t work on the comments). It does work on the online books of Signature Books.

    Comment by Bob — February 6, 2010 @ 10:48 am

  33. This is very nice. Do you have an update on two supposed books that I’ve heard have been in the works for years: 1)Nibley’s “magnum opus” on the Book of Abraham that he spent many years towards the end of his life working on, and 2) Signature’s 3-volume history of Joseph Smith?

    Comment by larryco_ — February 9, 2010 @ 4:52 pm

  34. According to the folks at Deseret Book, Nibley’s volume is forthcoming this spring.

    Comment by J. Stapley — February 9, 2010 @ 5:57 pm

  35. Larry, what J. said. I had heard that the plan was to get it out for his 100th birthday which is in March, I think. Another source said it kept getting cut down over the years. Started at about 1200 pages, then 800, now about 600.

Not sure about the JS project…I’ll ask around.

    Comment by Jared T — February 9, 2010 @ 6:16 pm

  36. “Signature?s 3-volume history of Joseph Smith?”

We had some tough decisions at Signature Books this year. We had several really good manuscripts to choose from. (May we be cursed with this dilemma each year!) In our biography slot, we chose to go with the Laurine Ekstrom Kingston biography. All three of the Joseph Smith biographies are far enough along that we could announce them. So now it’s just waiting their turn on our production line. they will very likely be in our next lineup. That is if the Smith-Pettit foundation doesn’t snake the project away from Signature and publish it themselves.

Keep an eye out for the six vol. Set of ?History of the Church? by Joseph Smith, Dan Vogel Editor, published by the Smith-Pettit foundation later this year. (now if Vogel and Marquardt will just finish up the ?legal papers,? I think we will be able to safely announce that we are once again, well ahead of the JSP project. And just under our budget of $800.)

  37. Does anyone know about any forthcoming RICHARD BUSHMAN project?

    Comment by Nate — February 9, 2010 @ 10:38 pm

  38. Nate, Bushman is apparently close to finishing a work on farming in the colonial period/early republic, which I suspect will use Mormons as examples but Mormonism will not be a significant or even minor theme. He has also mentioned a project looking at the Gold Plates in Mormon history, but I’m not sure what progress he’s made on that.

  39. J, Jared, and Tom: thanks for the updates!

    Comment by larryco_ — February 10, 2010 @ 12:56 pm

  40. If I’m not mistaken, Bushman is also finishing a manuscript on some theme concerning the Book of Mormon. Sorry I can’t be more specific.
