New Guest Blogger: Brett D.

By August 14, 2008

The Juvenile Instructor is pleased to announce our latest guest blogger, Brett D.  Brett describes himself as follows:

I am an MA student in History at BYU hoping to graduate in either April or August of 2009 and with plans of going on for a PhD in American history.  I have worked for two years for BYU’s Education in Zion exhibit as a researcher.  I am also currently working as a researcher for Ron Walker’s forthcoming biography of Brigham Young.  I am writing my thesis on the progressive era elements of the Church’s educational programs from 1885 to 1935.  A registered menace to society, I occupy my time watching BYU sports, particularly football.

Please join us here at the JI in welcoming Brett.

  1. Nice stuff — between the Brigham goodness and the thesis — more details please — this is exciting.

  2. Nice! Look forward to your posts. Didn’t know about Walker’s BY bio…this is interesting. Does he have a publisher for it? or a ETA?

    Your MA topic sounds fascinating.

  3. Welcome. I recently read that old history of the RS, Women of Covenant, and found the introduction of progressive theories and practices into the RS during this time period to be a fascinating subject.

  4. You’ll have to fill us in on the shuttering of the History program at BYU presently

  6. angrymormonliberal,

Nothing has changed with the grad program’s status since when they made the decision to furlough it last year. Brett, myself, and Stan are all part of the last admitted class, and after our class complete our degrees within the next year or two, the program will no longer exist. We discussed the implications in a post quite a while back here (in fact, you participated in that discussion).

  9. Thanks for the welcome guys. I’m still at work right now, so I don’t have time to write much of anything, but I’ll try and give a better response in a few hours. Thanks again

  10. Welcome, Brett. Between the WofW book, the BY bio, the HJG bio, and the MMM work, Walker must stay busy.

  11. Thanks Justin. I get the feeling that Ron might not sleep much. He definitely has a lot to keep him going. When I interviewed for the job I asked him how his bio would differ from Arrington. He said that Arrington was a good history of Brigham Young, but doesn’t always capture the personalness of Brigham. He told me that this book will focus more on the Brigham that emerges in personal letters and one on one experiences as shown in diaries, rather than the Journal of Discourses Brigham. So far it has been a great project to work on, going through diaries, newspapers, letters, ect. and seeing just how many different perspectives there were on Brigham.

  12. Oh, as far as the publisher, right now I’m not sure. I haven’t even thought to ask him.

  13. I guess this makes two BY bios forthcoming. It will be interesting to contrast them.

  14. Speaking of Brigham bio’s, I’m not sure which two you are talking about, J (up until today I just knew about Ron’s and John Turner’s), but today I just found out about a third: I guess Will Bagley is under contract with Knopf to do one. Apparently he is well underway, too.

  15. Yikes!

It will be tough to top M. R. Werner’s Brigham Young.
