Brigham Young’s Birthday Song, 1876

By June 1, 2020

I found this in the Journal of Charles L. Walker. I hope that others will point me to Latter-day Saint songs we haven’t heard before.

JOURNAL: St. George–June 1st. Dry and warm. Went with the choir to Pres. Young’s house to pay our respects on this anniverary of his birthday. The choir sand a song on teh north porch and were then invited into the hall and theer sang several songs appropriate to the occasion. The following one I composed for the choir, who did credit to it by the animated style in which they sang.

Tune–Tramp, Tramp, Tramp (Same as “In Our Lovely Deseret in LDS hymnbooks)

God bless thy chosen seer

To the Saints of God, most dear,

We rejoice to see his seventy-fifth birthday

May blessings rich from heaven

Freely unto him be given

And angels give him comfort night and day

CHORUS: Oh, God bless thy servant, Brigham

Prolong his life for many a year,

To guide us to Thy praise

We Saints of latter-days,

And the honest hearts in all the world to cheer

Gods blessings on him send

On this, the world’s best friend

Who so manfully has stood the trying hour

He’s been faithful to His God,

And held fast the “Iron Rod”

And Almighty God has led him by His power.

Chorus: Oh, God bless thy servant, Brigham, etc.

And may he live to see,

The Power and Majesty

Of the Holy Priesthood reigning o’er the earth,

And many temples stand

On this consecrated land,

And bless the goodly day that gave him birth.

Chorus: Oh, God bless thy servant, Brigham, etc.

  1. Happy, happy birthday, Brigham, dear!
Happy days will come to you all year!
If I had one wish then it would be
A happy two hundred and nineteenth birthday from you to me!
