JOB DESCRIPTION
This job is to assist the Church History Department in its purpose to help God’s Children make and keep sacred covenants by researching and writing for Church history publications, occasionally as a lead writer. Under supervision, this individual contributes to Church history publications by researching, writing, annotating, and editing content regarding Latter-day Saint history. Reports to managing historian or senior managing historian.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Writes for publications in expository and narrative styles
- Works under the close supervision of historian
- Finds content to support research projects under the direction of historian
- Provides content for large research publication with limited writing segments of a larger project
- Collaborates productively with other historians, writers, and editors on publication projects
- Accepts and incorporates critical feedback of research and writing
- Provides reviews of content related to a specific area of expertise
- Collaborates with management to prepare project schedules and ensure that deadlines are met
- Contributes to a collegial and professional atmosphere that incorporates the highest standards of behavior and promotes teamwork and collaboration
- Remains current on historical methods and the field of Latter-day Saint history
- Researches archival sources in the Church’s collection and other relevant archives and libraries
- Researches online databases and historical collections
- Critically evaluates and provides contextual analysis of historical sources
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- PhD in history, American studies, religious studies, or related field, or a master’s degree with 3 years of experience in researching and writing in the historical field or a track record of publishing peer reviewed scholarship
- Strong skills in archival research
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated attention to detail
- Ability to adhere to deadlines
- Exceptional written communication
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Good organizational skills
Preferred
- Experience researching Latter-day Saint history outside of North America (in a particular region or more broadly)
- Basic research and communication ability in a foreign (non-English) language
- Experience in Public History
