Job Ad: Women’s Historian at the Church History Library

JOB DESCRIPTION

This job is to assist the Church History Department in its purpose to help God’s Children make and keep sacred covenants by researching and writing for Church history publications, sometimes as a project lead. Under limited supervision, this individual acts as a primary contributor to Church history publications, researching, writing, annotating, and editing content regarding Latter-day Saint history. Reports to managing historian or senior managing historian.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Consistently meets deadlines
  • Helps plan and lead events related to women’s history or department projects
  • Directs Associate Historians in related research and needed material for projects
  • Reviews publications for quality, accuracy, and tone
  • Helps establish historical arguments and narratives for publications
  • Writes for publications in expository and narrative styles
  • Collaborates productively with other historians, writers, and editors on publication projects
  • Accepts and incorporates critical feedback of research and writing
  • Provides reviews of content related to a specific area of expertise
  • Collaborates with management to prepare project schedules and ensure that deadlines are met
  • Contributes to a collegial and professional atmosphere that incorporates the highest standards of behavior and promotes teamwork and collaboration
  • Remains current on historical methods and the field of Latter-day Saint history
  • Conducts research in archival sources to professional standards
  • Researches online databases and historical collections
  • Critically evaluates and provides contextual analysis of historical sources
  • Represents department at conferences and other events

QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD in history, American studies, religious studies, or related field, and 5 years of experience researching and writing in the historical field, or a master’s degree with 8 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated competence in women’s history, including Latter-day Saint women’s history
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to work in an academic environment that requires personal initiative and collaborative competence
  • Understanding of and commitment to working in a public history setting; professional and personal integrity required to maintain the trust and confidence of professional colleagues and department leadership and to represent the department in wider scholarly circles
  • Subject-matter expertise in relevant historical field
  • Strong archival research
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines
  • Exceptional written communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational skills
